The Gold Cadillac

Hello 6th Grade Students!

This week we started reading a novella, The Gold Cadillac, about an African-American family. From watching the PowerPoint presentation and video about the story and reading the beginning few pages, what predictions can you make? Address the following questions in your answer: Why do you think 'Lois' mother was not happy that the father purchased a brand new Cadillac? Do you think 'Lois' mother will eventually come around and want to keep the car, or will she ask the father to return it? Finally, please address the setting of the novella, (time and place). How does the setting contribute to your predictions? They are an African-American family living during segregation in the 1950's. What kind of complications might the family come across as they drive around in their new car in a segregated society. How do you think white Americans will react to their new car?

  1. I think that the mother was not happy because in her opinion the car was perfectly fine and it was because they did not even have it for a year or so. I think that the mother will always be mad but will come around eventually because she will probably think that they had some old adventures in the other car but we will start some new ones in this new car, the gold Cadillac. I also say that when they drive by the Americans will be very jealous but will say very cool car then they will have one just like it or one even better or maybe even like a want to be of that car.

  2. I think that the mom was upset because she probably didnt understand why and how her husband got this Cadillac.I think she will come around eventually but might take time.Since this Novella happened in the time when African Americans were not treated farely. While they are driving in the car i think that people will be stunned and surprised. Also I think the white people will be jealous.

  3. I think that the mom was upset because they had a perfectly good car and the man sold it anyway. She probably thought that she would have been able to use that money for something more import. I do think she will come around to the car, but it will take time. I do not think the white people are going to have as positive a reaction as their relatives and neighbors. When they are driving I think they will be stopped or when they are parked whites will think that they are poor and that maybe the dad STOLE the car...not bought it.

  4. I think the mother (Louis') didn't like the car because it was expensive and their old car was perfectly fine. She probably would come around and cart liking the car like the others. It takes a little getting used to. This story takes place in the mid 1950's.

  7. I think the mom was mad because the car was fine and this one was to fancy. I think that they will keep the car but whites will vandalize it cause of jealousy and because they are black. It takes place in the 1900's in the south of the USA.

  8. I think the mom didn't like the new gold catillac because she thought that it was a waste of money and because they already had a good car. I think that she would come around though because she will see how much her family enjoys it so she wouldn't want to ruin it for them.

  9. I think the mom didnt like the Gold Cadillac because it was a waste of money and the husband was showing off. I also think its because they just got a new car and didnt need another.I think that at the end she will start liking it from seeing how happy it makes her family and she will ride in it or drive with it one day.

probably because they were saving up for something else and that their other car was perfectly fine.
she probably was going to ask to return the car. This happened in the 1950's in Northeren America. I feel that the whites will think that the African americans were rich and probably might want to vandilix=ze or do something to the golden car.

  14. I think that the old car had nothing wrong with it. And when the Dad bought the new Gold Cadillac the mom did not like it because they were supposed to save money for a new house but the dad wasted some of the money and the mom would probably want to return the car. The white Americans would probably damage the car because of jealousy. When they are driving the car, the police would stop the Black family and accuse them for speeding when they are not and accuse them for stealing the car, even though they actually bought the car with their own money.
