The Sounds of Poetry

Hello 6th Grade Students!

Welcome to second semester!

This week we read and discussed some wonderful poems in class by Gwendolyn Brooks, Shakespeare and Ogden Nash. From all the poems we read, ("Cynthia in the Snow," "Full Fathom Five," "Nash Menagerie") which was your favorite? Why? Which poetic devices (alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme, meter) did you like best in the poem you chose?

  1. In my opinion I liked "Cynthia in the Snow" By Gwendolyn Brooks the best because while we were reading it we went deep into what she wrote. Like how she wrote "Still white as milk or shirts, So beautiful it hurts." This was probably the best part of the whole poem for me, because she lived in the time when discrimination was going on.. She probably was saying how the white people would make fun of her and how much it hurts. Or when she said "It SHUSHES, it hushes." She probably meant nobody wanted to listen to her or here about her feelings. "It laughs a lovely whiteness,
And whitely whirls away." I liked this poetic term of alliteration

i have to agree with alexia because she expressed her feelings and wrote about how whites segregated blacks without showing any words to give a clue like they laugh away from me and i am black, or something like that. i liked the alliteration and onomatopoeia because they were most of the poem and they express lots of excitement in the poem.

  6. I loved Cynthia in the snow because of the alliteration and the way it seems like it's a normal poem but it has meaning and it shows the way the white people segregated the African Americans. it makes you think about other poems

  7. I liked "Full Fathom Five" the most out of all 3 poems because of the meter and the rhyme. The author wrote everything in Iambic pentameter so it sounded more like a poem... The other poem "Cynthia in the Snow" although it had a great meaning after discussing it so deeply was not very poem like...

  8. I liked Cynthia in the snow the best because you really have to think about it, like when she is saying its so neutiful it hurts she meaning probably that the white people are hurting her.

  9. My favorite is the Full Fathom Five poem because i think about it like even though his father died in the sea dose not mean he's still not with and when you have someone you miss to you can kind of relate to it.Full Fathom Five is more like a real poem the way you read it sounds more poetic and if you donut here older poems that much Full Fathom five sounds Unique. It was fun this week discussing all these poem and the reason behind it.

  10. My favorite poem that we read was "Cynthia in the Snow" because I really enjoyed the rhyme scheme of that poem. In that poem there was onomatopia and personification. This poem was about the life of the author during the old days where there was segregation still going on. This poem is deeply detailed, and to figure out her thoughts you have to think about the wording in each and every line of the poem.

  11. My favorite poem was ''FULL FATHOM FIVE'' because the way shakespere wrote it had a lot of feeling and thought which made it original and very interesting. I like how he wrote his wonderful poem inside of on of his plays. The poem that was part of his play is very good and so is the poem that was well written inside of his play.

    1. I also liked "cynthia in the snow" because its explains with hint of how there was segregation, we notice that because it says that the snow is white and that it hurts it is comparing humans with snow.
